Gameplay

This section does not yet meet the quality standards of Bulbapedia. Please feel free to edit this section to make it conform to Bulbapedia norms and conventions.

Battles

In Pokémon Medallion Battle, two players face off with teams consisting of six Pokémon. Up to two of these Pokémon may be the Great Ball and Ultra Ball tier and Crown pokemon (kinda like legendary Pokemons) each and no two Pokémon from the same evolutionary family may be used simultaneously.

Players take turns playing Pokémon from their Bench face down; their tier is visible on the back of the medal, putting the player who goes first at a disadvantage. On the first turn, the player with the higher Rating goes first; otherwise, the winner of the previous turn goes first. After both medals are played, they are turned face up and the Pokémon with the higher CP wins the fight, scoring a point. The player who goes first wins any tie. The first player to score 3 points wins the match.

Power Priority

Powers activate in this order:

1. Clearance (ONLY if there are Entry Powers from the previous turn)

Entry Powers from the previous turn take effect

2. Priority

Pokémon with Priority attempt to fight

3. Arena

Pokémon with Priority attempt to fight

4. Entry Powers

5. Super Effective

6. Reveal

7. Protect (ONLY if your CP is lower)

Pokémon

Pokémon are represented in medallion form with these properties:

  • One of seven types, based on the original Pokémon TCG types: Colorless, Grass, Fire, Water, Lightning, Fighting, Psychic
  • One of three tiers: Poké Ball < Great Ball < Ultra Ball
  • CP, which currently ranges from 150 to 1300 in increments of 50
    • IV, which is bonus CP ranging from 0-31
  • Rarity, which is rated on a scale of 1 to 3 stars
    • There are 4 to 5 stars, which is Crown (legendary) pokemon
      • Only a max of two crown pokemon can be used in a deck at one time

Powers

There are a variety of powers in Pokémon Medallion Battle, which activate before the Pokémon fight:

  • Super Effective: If activated, multiplies the CP of a Pokémon by either 1.5x, 2x, or 2.5x
    • May be activated by your opponent's Pokémon's type or tier
  • Priority: Allows the Pokémon to fight immediately if its CP is higher
    • Affected by Entry Hazards and Support, but not any other abilities
  • Protect: Activates if the Pokémon is about to lose
    • Using Protect will cause you to go first in the next turn
  • Reveal: Reveals a random Pokémon on your opponent's Bench
  • Arena: Increases the CP of Pokémon of a certain type
    • Unlike Entry Hazards and Support, Arena takes effect immediately
    • Affects both players' Pokémon
  • Entry Hazards: Reduces the CP of the next Pokémon played by your opponent
  • Support: Increases the CP of the next Pokémon you play
  • Clearance: Removes Entry Hazards and Support before they take effect
    • This occurs instantly, before even Priority

Once a power is activated, it cannot be used again for the remainder of the match.

Evolution

Pokémon may be evolved by spending Candy in the following amounts based on their rarity and the resulting tier:

Rarity To Poké To Great To Ultra
50 100 200
★★ 100 200 400
★★★ 200 400 800

The evolved forms of Pokémon have higher CP and possibly higher tier as well.

If a Pokémon has a power, it will learn the same type of power after evolving. Otherwise, it has a chance to learn any power.

Pokémon with multiple evolutions will randomly evolve into one. In this case, Pokémon may learn any power, even if they already had a power prior to evolution.

Gyms

As you accumulate Rating, you earn Badges. Once a Badge is earned, you advance to the next Gym, unlocking additional Pokémon. You cannot fall back down to a previous Gym.

# Gym Name Badge Req. Rating
1 Trainer Town Trainee 1200
2 Greenwood Grove Grass 1400
3 Scorchfire Summit Fire 1600
4 Clearwater Coast Water 1800
5 Power Plant Lightning 2200
6 Dustrock Dojo Fighting 2600
7 Shadowmoss Shrine Psychic 3000
8 Dragon's Den Dragon 3600
9 Silverglade Safari Jungle 4200
10 Mistwreath Mountains Geyser 5000
11 Mooncreast Meadow Fairy 6000

After earning all 11 Badges, you may compete in the Champions Cup, which is a globally ranked leaderboard.

Raids

Raids are events where players work together in parties to defeat Bosses.

Raid parties can contain up to 6 players. The leader of a Raid party can invite other players to help. He or she may also expel players that have not dealt any damage to the Boss.

In a Raid battle, the Boss is accompanied into the battle with 5 other Pokémon. Unlike in normal Gym battles, the Boss always plays first, and you score points based on the difference in CP. If one of your Pokémon loses, the battle ends and your score is dealt as damage to the Boss's HP. Players can watch an ad when their first Pokémon loses to revive it; the Boss's Pokémon will be removed, but your revived Pokémon will return to the Bench.

Players are eligible for rewards if they deal damage equal to 1/8th of the Boss's HP. The top 2 high scores get one medal each, and the top 3 damage get 2/1/1 medals.

At the start of each stage, a Boss is randomly generated. After a Boss is defeated, the Raid party advances to the next stage. Raid stages grow more difficult and yield better rewards up to Stage 15.

Note: You can only join one Raid party every 24 hours.
