It evolves from Eevee when leveled up with high friendship during the day (in the main series games) or when leveled up with high friendship with a Sun Shard in the Bag (in Pokémon XD: Gale of Darkness). It is one of Eevee's final forms, the others being Vaporeon, Jolteon, Flareon, Umbreon, Leafeon, Glaceon, and Sylveon.
It is the starter Pokémon in Pokémon Colosseum alongside the other Generation II Eeveelution, Umbreon.
Biology
Espeon is a quadrupedal, mammalian Pokémon with slender legs and dainty paws. It is covered in fine, lilac fur. Its ears are large, and it has purple eyes with white pupils. There are tufts of fur near its eyes, and a small, red gem embedded in its forehead. It also has a thin, forked tail.
Espeon's velvety fur is so sensitive that it can sense minuscule shifts in the air, allowing it to predict the weather and its enemies' movements. When predicting an opponent's actions, the tip of its tail quivers. The gem on Espeon's forehead glows when it unleashes psychic energy from the gem and darkens when all of the built-up energy has been exhausted. Espeon builds up its psychic power by bathing in the sunlight. As such, it does not handle battles at night well. Espeon shows extreme loyalty to any Trainer that it considers worthy, even being said to have awakened its psychic powers from its desire to protect its Trainer; others say that its powers were born from its need to keep itself safe. Espeon is rarely found in the wilderness, instead being more commonly found in urban areas, under the ownership of other Trainers.

Evolution

Friendship (daytime) → |
|
- Eevee won't evolve into Espeon or Umbreon in Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen due to lack of day and night cycle mechanics.
- Even if all criteria to evolve Eevee into Espeon are fulfilled in Generations VI and VII, it will evolve into Sylveon if knows a Fairy-type move and has at least two hearts of Affection or just knows a Fairy-type move in Generation VIII. Similarly in generations from IV to VII it will evolve into Leafeon near Moss Rock or Glaceon near Ice Rock regardless of other conditions while getting level up.

Trivia
- Eevee cannot evolve into Espeon or Umbreon in FireRed and LeafGreen due to the lack of a time system. In order to be obtained and added to the Pokédex in these versions, an Eevee must be traded to Ruby, Sapphire, and Emerald Versions, evolved there, and then traded back, or else traded from Pokémon Colosseum or Pokémon XD.
- Espeon shares its category with Sunflora and Volcarona. They are all known as the Sun Pokémon.
- It also shares its category with Solgaleo in Japanese, as Solgaleo is also known as the Sun Pokémon in that language.
- Espeon was designed by Atsuko Nishida.[1]
- Espeon has blue inner ears in the games, but in other forms of media, such as the anime, they are often purple.
- Espeon is tied with Glaceon for the highest base Special Attack stat of all Eeveelutions.
- If one was to rearrange the Pokérap GS so all the Pokémon are in National Pokédex order, Espeon and Remoraid would remain in its position in the song.
- Espeon is the only Eeveelution without a type advantage over another.
Origin
Because of its feline appearance, Espeon appears to be based on the legend of the bakeneko and the nekomata, both magical cat yōkai described as mysterious and intelligent, but the distinction between the two is that the latter is depicted with a forked tail. It may also be based on the mythological lynx, a feline creature that possesses the psychic power of clairvoyance. The red coloring of the jewel could be a reference to a lunar eclipse, an event in which the moon passes directly behind Earth and into its shadow, making it appear red in color. The jewel may also be a reference to the carbunclo, a mythological South American creature with a jewel or mirror on its forehead, and sometimes described as a feline. The position of the jewel also resembles the idea of a “third eye”.
Its large ears can be traced from various felines such as caracals, oriental shorthairs, lynxes, and possibly servals, while its fine hair is similar to that of a sphynx cat. Espeon's ability to sense minute shifts in the air with its sensitive fur mirrors a cat's ability to use its sensitive whiskers to detect the slightest directional change in a breeze.
Name origin
Espeon is a combination of ESP (a branch of psychic abilities) and eon (an immeasurably long period of time, possibly referring to how long evolution takes naturally). Eon is a suffix all Eevee evolutions share and was Eevee's English prototype name.
Eifie is a combination of エスパー esupaa (ESPer, a person with psychic powers) and フィール fiiru (feel), referring to its extraordinary sensory abilities. It is very similar to Eevee, in both writing and sound (イーブイ/エーフィ).
