Effect

Generation III

This move effect may be in need of research.
Reason: Can the Focus Band trigger before being stolen?
You can discuss this on the talk page.

Covet inflicts damage and steals the target's held item if it is holding any. If the target is not holding an item or the user is already holding an item, Covet cannot steal an item.

Even if the user faints when using Covet (such as due to the target's Rough Skin), it still steals the target's held item.

Covet cannot steal an item if the target has the Sticky Hold Ability, or if it hits a Pokémon's substitute. Held e-Reader Berries and Mail cannot be stolen.

Covet can permanently steal items from both wild Pokémon and Trainer's Pokémon; however, wild Pokémon cannot steal the player's Pokémon's held items. In Link Battles, battle facilities (except the Battle Pyramid), and Secret Bases, stolen items are returned at the end of the battle (or the end of the challenge in the case of the Battle Pike). In Pokémon Colosseum and XD, Covet does not permanently steal items.

In this generation, Covet does not make contact.

Generation IV

Covet now makes contact. If a Trainer's Pokémon steals an item from the player, it will be returned at the end of the battle.

Items cannot be stolen from Pokémon with the Ability Multitype. A held Griseous Orb cannot be stolen.

If the target's consumable held item is triggered by Covet (such as a Chilan Berry or Focus Sash), it will be consumed before it can be stolen.

Generation V

Covet's power was changed from 40 to 60.

If the user faints when using Covet (such as due to the target's Rough Skin or Rocky Helmet), it cannot steal the target's held item. If Covet causes a Pokémon with the Sticky Hold Ability to faint, it can now steal its held item.

Covet no longer steals a Trainer's Pokémon's items permanently; however, a wild Pokémon's item is still permanently stolen by the player.

Covet can now steal a held Griseous Orb as long as neither the user nor the target is Giratina. Plates cannot be stolen if either the user or the target is Arceus (Multitype has no effect on Covet), and Drives cannot be stolen if either the user or the target is Genesect.

Generation VI onwards

This move effect may be in need of research.
Reason: Does a Cell Battery or Snowball trigger before being stolen if Covet's type is converted?
You can discuss this on the talk page.

Covet's PP was changed from 40 to 25.

Covet cannot steal a Mega Stone or Orb if either the user or the target could use it to Mega Evolve or undergo Primal Reversion, a Z-Crystal from any Pokémon, or a memory if either the user or the target is Silvally.

Covet can be used as a part of a Contest Spectacular combination, causing Bestow, Fling and Present to give an extra three appeal points if any of them is used in the next turn.

Generation VIII

When used in a Max Raid Battle, no matter if the target is the raid boss or one of the player's own teammates, Covet fails entirely, without dealing damage.
