| After their battle with Gyutaro and Daki, the Upper Rank Six siblings, Tanjiro, Zenitsu, Inosuke, and Nezuko are found by the Kakushi. In the Infinity Castle, Muzan Kibutsuji summons the remaining five Upper Rank demons – Akaza, Upper Five Gyokko, Upper Four Hantengu, Upper Two Doma, and Upper One Kokushibo. He admonishes them for their failure to kill the Ubuyashiki family and find the Blue Spider Lily. When Gyokko provides new information, he is sent on a joint mission with Hantengu. While Zenitsu and Inosuke are summoned to individual missions, Tanjiro continues his rehabilitation. When his swordsmith Hotaru Haganezuka refuses to forge him a new sword, Tanjiro is told to meet him at the Swordsmith Village to discuss the matter in person. He arrives with Nezuko and meets the village's chief, Tecchin Tecchikawahara, who reassures Tanjiro he will bring Hotaru back to build the sword. Tanjiro is later shown to the village's hot springs where he meets the Love Hashira Mitsuri Kanroji, who is initially dejected after being ignored by an unknown person. While in the hot springs, Tanjiro encounters Genya, the Wind Hashira Sanemi Shinazugawa's younger brother and fellow Demon Slayer, who refuses Tanjiro's hospitality and storms off. At the village, Mitsuri hints at Tanjiro about a "secret weapon" hidden somewhere that can make him stronger and bids farewell to the siblings. The next day, while searching for the weapon, Tanjiro finds the Mist Hashira Muichiro Tokito in an argument with someone and sees that seemingly with them is a man from his dreams. | |||||||

| While eavesdropping, Tanjiro watches as Muichiro threatens the swordsmith he was arguing with. He tries to defend him but the indifferent Hashira knocks him out for interfering. After waking up, the boy, named Kotetsu, explains that the "man" he saw is actually an advanced mechanical training doll, built after a swordsman who lived over 300 years ago. He explains the doll was made by his ancestors, and as he lacks a family, it is all he has to pass on to the next generation. Tanjiro agrees to protect it, but Muichiro appears, having finished his training session and causing extensive damage. However, after Kotetsu discovers it is still functional, he tells Tanjiro to train with it in order to become stronger than the arrogant Muichiro. However, training proves harsh as Kotetsu denies Tanjiro food and water when he fails to connect hits on the doll. When Tanjiro eventually faints from exhaustion, he imagines himself in the afterlife and sees a peculiar stone in the Sanzu River, enabling him to detect a scent faster than the Opening Thread. He uses this to his advantage, eventually landing a powerful strike on the doll's head, which shatters and reveals a concealed sword inside. | |||||||

| To the disappointment of Tanjiro and Kotetsu, the sword is tarnished. Haganezuka suddenly arrives, now extremely muscular from solitary training to be able to forge a better sword for Tanjiro. Intending to restore the ancient sword, he gives Tanjiro another one in the meantime. The next day, he attempts to befriend Genya but is rebuffed, though he notices he had regrown a lost tooth. Unbeknownst to all, Gyokko and Hantengu have infiltrated the Swordsmith Village. Hantengu finds Tanjiro, Nezuko, and Muichiro, who beheads him. Two new demons then regenerate from the severed body and head. After one of them, Karaku, blasts Muichiro away with his wind-based uchiwa, the other, Sekido, nearly electrocutes Tanjiro with a khakkhara before Genya appears and beheads them both with a sawed-off shotgun and a Nichirin wakizashi. However, the demons split into two again; one of them deafens Tanjiro with a sonic attack while Nezuko tries to defend Genya from the other, who wields a yari. Muichiro runs back to assist them but finds Kotetsu being attacked by a fish-like demon. Initially electing not to help him, he saves him before he is eaten after remembering Tanjiro's words about helping others eventually helping him. | |||||||

| Though Muichiro beheads the fish demon, it does not die until he slashes the vase on its back. When Kotetsu begs him to save Hotaru and fellow swordsmith Kozo Kanamori, Muichiro initially ignores him to protect the village until he remembers Kagaya's advice about trivial events triggering his memories to come back, prompting him to take Kotetsu and find the two swordsmiths. Tanjiro realizes that each of the four demons represents an emotion: joy (Urogi), anger (Sekido), pleasure (Karaku), and sorrow (Aizetsu). Genya confuses Sekido and Aizetsu with his unusual durability against fatal wounds while Nezuko burns Karaku with her blood and uses his own wind against him, blasting him away. Sekido immobilizes Nezuko by stabbing the demon's neck and shocking her. Tanjiro is able to use Urogi's flight to reach Nezuko and Genya; he avoids Sekido's attacks by using Urogi's foot, which cannot conduct the electricity being made with the same cells. He frees Nezuko, who protects him from Sekido, but both are incapacitated when Karaku returns and hits them with his winds. More fish demons attack the village as Mitsuri makes her way to rescue the swordsmiths. | |||||||

| After saving Kozo from a fish demon, Muichiro is taken to his work shed for a new blade, but they encounter a waiting Gyokko. Mitsuri arrives at the village, using her elongated, whip-like sword to swiftly defeat the attacking fish demons. She then defeats the largest fish demon with her Love Breathing before it kills Tecchin. After Karaku pins Nezuko down beneath heavy debris, she grips her hands onto Tanjiro's blade, smearing it in her blood. Muichiro attacks Upper Five for his repulsive vase art, discovering he can produce new vases and teleport between them to avoid getting slashed. He is soon trapped by Gyokko in a watery vase, suffocating him. Nezuko uses her Blood Demon Art and heats up Tanjiro's blade, turning it bright red. Sekido, looking through Muzan's memories, realizes the blade resembles the sword of the Demon Slayer who almost killed him. As his scar transforms into a fiery mark once more, Tanjiro unleashes his Hinokami Kagura, swiftly beheading Urogi, Karaku, and Sekido at blazing speeds. He then sees that Aizetsu has been beheaded by Genya as well but is shocked to see he has now assumed the appearance of a demon. | |||||||

| Tanjiro realizes Genya still has his human conscience and instructs him to find a hidden fifth demon after the four beheaded clones fail to disintegrate. He rescues Nezuko from the rubble and instructs her to protect Genya, but the demons fully regenerate, forcing Tanjiro to stay behind and guide Genya through the forest with his sense of smell. Genya eventually finds the now tiny Hantengu but his body proves more durable than his clones. Sekido then appears from behind him. Realizing he will die, Genya remembers his childhood: his family was constantly abused by their father, who was eventually killed from being despised. One night, Sanemi went to look for their mother, having promised alongside Genya that they would protect their family. However, a demon attacked and killed all five of Genya's younger siblings and scarring him. After running to get help, he found that Sanemi had killed their mother, unaware that she was the demon that killed their siblings, and branded him a murderer in his grief. He cries believing he will die without apologizing to Sanemi, but Tanjiro saves him by attacking Sekido. After Genya shields Tanjiro from Aisetzu's Blood Demon Art, Tanjiro goes after Hantengu himself, intent on beheading him. | |||||||
