Parasyte -the maxim- (寄生獣 セイの格率, Kiseijū: Sei no Kakuritsu) is an anime television series produced by Madhouse based on the Parasyte manga series written and illustrated by Hitoshi Iwaaki. The series follows Shinichi Izumi, a high school boy whose right hand becomes possessed by an alien parasite who calls itself Migi, finding himself in a battle against other Parasites who feast on humans.
The series aired on NTV between October 9, 2014 and March 26, 2015 and was simulcast by Crunchyroll outside of Asia and by Animax Asia in Southeast Asia and South Asia.[1][2][3] The series is licensed in North America by Sentai Filmworks[4] and began airing on Adult Swim's Toonami programming block from October 4, 2015 to April 10, 2016.[5] The opening theme song is "Let Me Hear" performed by Fear, and Loathing in Las Vegas, while the ending theme is "It's the Right Time" performed by Daichi Miura.
The Titles of the first twenty episodes correspond to the titles of published literary works including novels, novellas, plays and poetry.

| Shinichi Izumi wakes up with a bizarre feeling in his right hand. At school, his hand gropes fellow student Satomi Murano. During the night, a Parasite had attempted to enter his body through his nose in order to control his brain, but since Shinichi sneezed, it ended up burrowing into his right arm. The next day, Shinichi tries to save a little girl from being run over, and he witnesses his right hand stop the car. Confused, he tries to stab his hand with a knife; the Parasite reveals its form on his hand to stop him. Shinichi is forced to cooperate with the Parasite while keeping it a secret from his parents, Kazuyuki and Nobuko Izumi. The Parasite directs him to a dog inhabited by another Parasite and Shnichi is shown that the only way to kill it is to destroy the heart of its host. | ||||||

| Shinichi asks for a name to call the Parasite so it gives itself the name "Migi", meaning "right". Shinichi hears from friend Yuko Tachikawa that gruesome "mincemeat murders" are being reported in various locations around the world. He learns from Migi that Parasites practice cannibalism for survival. A Parasite controlling a man named Mr. B confronts them, inviting Migi to join him. Migi kills Mr. B and remains with Shinichi, unsure whether relocation is possible for Parasites. The next day, Shinichi and Satomi go on a date and see thugs throwing stones at a cat buried in a sandbox. Shinichi intervenes, surprising Satomi by his change in personality. | ||||||

| Shinichi is dismayed to discover that the new math teacher, Ryōko Tamiya, is a Parasite and aware of his secret. Ryōko declares that she is not interested in fighting him. She introduces her partner Mr. A. and reveals that she is pregnant, establishing that Parasites are capable of reproducing humans when they take over human bodies. The next day during class, Mr. A ambushes Shinichi's school, seeing him as a threat. He attacks staff and forces the students to evacuate. Migi suggests using the crowd of students as a human shield but Shinichi is against hurting anyone and instead lures Mr. A away from the students. Migi tells a frightened Shinichi that they must fight together as Mr.A approaches them. | ||||||

| As Migi and Mr. A exchange rapid attacks, Shinichi is able to puncture Mr. A in the chest with a metal table leg, as he and Migi had planned, figuring that Mr. A would underestimate Shinichi as a human. Mortally wounded, Mr. A tries to find Ryōko, but she sets off an explosion with gas tanks to kill him and escapes. The pregnant and unmarried Ryōko is forced to resign from the school, unaccepted by staff. Migi experiments on how long he can separate from Shinichi's body, though it's only a few minutes. Shinichi's parents, Kazuyuki and Nobuko, plan a trip to the beach, though Shinichi worries about their safety because of the Parasites. Migi reasons that Parasites inhabit urban areas and in the countryside, they would be safer due to the lower population. | ||||||

| When Shinichi sees a gang of delinquents led by Mitsuo assaulting Kazuki, he steps in to help but takes a beating. A female gang member named Kana Kimishima detects something off about his nature. Mitsuo and his gang abduct Satomi and Shinichi is no match for Mitsuo. A senior student named Kamijou arrives with a large group to deal with Mitsuo. Migi deduces that Kana can sense Parasite wavelengths. A Parasite kills Nobuko and takes her body as host before attacking Kazuyuki. Shinichi is shocked when his mother arrives home and refuses to listen to Migi trying to tell him that his mother is no longer human but a Parasite. The Parasite stabs Shinichi through his chest. | ||||||

| After Nobuko leaves, Migi merges into Shinichi's body to seal the hole inside his heart, saving his life. Shinichi is informed that his father is in hospital and vows to kill the Parasite controlling his mother. In the beach town, he meets Makiko Hayase, a young student working at an inn nearby. Shinichi becomes angry when his father denies seeing a monster take his mother and realizes his father is unable to face the truth. Migi explains that since repairing Shinichi's heart, Migi falls asleep for four hours a day during which time his senses become inoperative. The next day, Migi senses a Parasite and Shinichi runs at a surprisingly inhuman speed toward the beach where he sees the Parasite. | ||||||

| Shinichi meets Mamoru Uda, a human who has a Parasite fused into his jaw, which saved him from drowning in the sea. Happy to discover that there are others like him, Shinichi tells Mamoru about Migi. Migi reveals that he had scattered his Parasite cells throughout Shinichi's body to close his heart wound, explaining Shinichi's physiological changes, such as super-hearing, speed, and reflexes. Nobuko arrives but Migi falls asleep. However, he morphs into a scythe right before so that Shinichi has some defense. Nobuko wounds Mamoru and goes to kill Shinichi but Mamoru executes a surprise attack, killing Nobuko. Shinichi and his father return home. | ||||||

| The pregnant Ryōko assigns a Parasite-controlled teenager to keep an eye on Shinichi. Satomi observes that Shinichi has changed since his return, appearing colder, which causes a rift between them. Shinichi realizes that he has begun thinking like Migi and it seems he's lost the ability to cry. At school, Shinichi meets Hideo Shimada, the Parasite sent by Ryōko disguised as a transfer student. Kana believes Shinichi is her soulmate due to being able to sense him but when she mistakes Hideo's presence for Shinichi's, Shinichi warns her that she should not pursue her senses, as they will get her in danger. That night, Hideo changes his face to look like Shinichi and feasts on a girl. | ||||||

| Hideo wonders why he sometimes gets weak signals from Migi. Takizawa, chief of police, interviews Shinichi's father about the Parasite that killed Nobuko. Kazuyuki confirms the Parasite's likeness in a sketch drawn by Haruki Tachikawa, a criminal profiling illustrator and older brother of Yuko, Shinichi's friend. Yuko discovers Hideo's ability to change his face. Haruki then tells Yuko about Parasites. The next day, Yuko confronts Hideo about his identity; Migi senses his intent to murder, angering Shinichi. | ||||||

| Yuko throws paint thinner at Hideo when he attacks her, then jumps out the window to safety. The chemical messes up Hideo's Parasite form, causing him to lose his mind and enter an uncontrolled killing spree. An evacuation is initiated but many students and teachers are massacred. Shinichi saves Satomi. With Hideo on the school rooftop, he travels to another roof 300 meters away, a distance at which they won't be sensed by Hideo. Migi helps him fling a rock at Hideo, which shoots through his chest and kills him. The government decides to keep the existence of Parasites secret from the public. Shinichi finally patches things up with Satomi after she thanks him for saving her. | ||||||

| Shinichi hesitates to tell Kana the truth though he is worried that she can detect his presence and other Parasites. A Parasite named Gotou murders twenty-two members of a yakuza organization in an experiment to test his fighting ability against armed humans without resorting to Parasite weaponry. Shinichi feels that Migi truly has merged with him, as his chest hurts when he feels emotionally distressed. Kana becomes dejected after she witnesses Shinichi sharing his first kiss with Satomi after a date. Migi senses eight Parasites at Takeshi Hirokawa's mayoral campaign. Unsettled, Shinichi wonders why Parasites are running for mayor. | ||||||

| Shinichi and Migi conclude that Hirokawa is running for mayor to create a safe haven for Parasites. Shinichi becomes concerned that Kana's ability may place her in danger. Migi reveals that Kana emits a weak signal detectable by Parasites, meaning that they can also seek her out. Kana, still believing that she can sense Shinichi because they are fated for each other, doesn't listen to his warnings. Shinichi plans to meet with her to show her the truth about Migi; Kana follows her senses to an abandoned building, thinking he is there but instead encountering a Parasite. The Parasite stabs her just as Shinichi arrives. Shinichi rips out the host's heart in rage, surprising Migi with his strength, and Kana dies in his arms. At her funeral, Shinichi is calm and still cannot cry, wondering if he really has lost the ability to be human. | ||||||

| The newly elected Mayor Hirokawa holds a Parasite meeting about the rogue Parasite that killed Kana. Reiko Tamura (formerly Ryōko Tamiya) suggests Shinichi is involved. Reiko hires a private investigator named Shiro Shiro Kuramori to follow Shinichi to capture any strange incidents. Satomi is disturbed that Shinichi is so calm about Kana's death. Shinichi returns to the abandoned building to mourn Kana's death and Kuramori sees Migi, who attempts to kill him. Shinichi desperately restrains Migi, allowing Kuramori to escape. Migi and Shinichi realize they're being watched. Shinichi meets Satomi, who is upset that he is hiding something. He tries to tell her the truth but cannot due to Migi's threats, which drives a wedge between the couple. | ||||||

| When Kuramori tells Reiko that he was attacked by Shinichi's right hand, she fires him. Shinichi and Mamoru Uda abduct Kuramori so Shinichi can explain the truth about Migi. Migi reveals that Kuramori's employer, Reiko, is a Parasite. The next day, Shinichi meets Reiko at a university, where she attended a lecture on human behavior. She explains that she is interested in the evolution of Parasites to coexist with humans. When she taunts Shinichi about his mother's death, he tries to fight her but she uses her baby as a shield. The unbearable pain in his chest causes him to run away. | ||||||

| Hirokawa has been securing "dining areas" for the Parasites who are a part of his cabal. In a parking garage, Kuramori and Shinichi witness the Parasite Kawada murder an innocent woman. Kuramori records video footage of Shinichi and Migi defeating Kawada in an intense battle. However, Kuramori decides to get rid of the footage and withdraw from investigating Parasites. Hirokawa sees Shinichi as a threat because of his intervention in the parking garage and enlists Gotou to dispose of him. Migi detects three Parasites with the intention of killing Shinichi but falls asleep so Shinichi goes on the run for four hours, waiting for Migi to wake up. A Parasite catches up just as Migi awakes and realizes that the three Parasites he detected actually share one body, Miki. | ||||||

| Shinichi and Migi decapitate Miki only to discover that Miki is a part of Gotou, who is actually composed of five Parasites. Shinichi flees by hitching a ride. He later hears a news report that Kuramori's family was killed so he calls his father, warning him to leave because he might be targeted. The traumatized Kuramori is interrogated by detective Hirama who knows about Parasites. Reiko berates the members of Hirokawa's cabal, Kusano, Hikawa and Maesawa, who killed Kuramori's family but not Kuramori himself. They mistrust her because she sees the human race much stronger than they assumed. That night, the three of them attack Reiko, planning to kill her. | ||||||

| Reiko kills Hikawa and Maesawa by secreting a fragment of herself inside each of them, then kills Kusano. She returns home only to find that her son has been kidnapped by Kuramori, with a note to meet him at the park. Reiko contacts Shinichi to meet her there as well. Satomi, worrying about Shinichi, tries to follow Reiko. When Reiko arrives at a bridge in the park, Kuramori threatens throw her son to his death, accusing her of being a monster. Reiko, surprising even herself, stabs Kuramori and retrieves her son before Kuramori falls over the railing. Detective Hirama reaches the dying Kuramori who identifies Reiko before he passes away. As it begins to snow, Shinichi comes face-to-face with Reiko. | ||||||

| Reiko tells Shinichi how her research has shown that Parasites and humans are part of a single biosystem, and that Parasites depend on humans to survive. Hirama and his men open fire on Reiko. To Migi's shock, Reiko does not fight back or flee even though she has the ability to. She entrusts Shinichi with her baby before she dies. Shinichi sees his mother in Reiko and recalls Kana and his friends who have died. For the first time since merging with Migi, Shinichi cries, which Satomi witnesses. Suspicious of his constant encounters with Parasites, Hirama takes Shinichi to an interrogation room where he is brought face-to-face with Uragami, a prisoner and serial killer who claims that he can discern Parasites. | ||||||

| Uragami does not detect anything inhuman in Shinichi's eyes, much to Hirama's frustration. An operation to eliminate Parasites is announced and new police tactical officer Yamagishi is assigned. Shinichi returns to school as the year comes to an end but Hirama enlists him to help in the operation, which frustrates Satomi, who wants them all to live normally. Yamagishi's assault force surrounds the town hall, which he suspects contains a number of Parasites. As they evacuate civilians, they use high-tech equipment to scan for Parasites among the humans and detect one in a female host. | ||||||

| Yamagishi's squad shoot the female Parasite through the heart with high-powered shotguns, killing her. Hirokawa and the Parasites detect the trap and two Parasites cause the squad to open fire, damaging the scanning equipment. Yamagishi and his squad enter the building to shoot down Parasites, but sacrifice human lives in the process, which they justify as for the greater good. Yamagishi takes Uragami with him for help and orders the assault squad to kill anyone they find, prioritizing the elimination of Parasites over the lives of civilians. Squad members encounter Gotou, who uses his unique powers to wipe out the squad. Another squad finds Hirokawa waiting for them. | ||||||

| Hirokawa accuses humans of being the infection of Earth through pollution and overpopulation and that they can't accept Parasites living among them. He is shot dead by the squad but they are surprised to discover that he is human, not a Parasite. Uragami shoots Hirama's partner and escapes. Yamagishi's squad is unable to defeat Gotou and Yamagishi is the last to die. Gotou encounters Shinichi, realizing he was part of the ambush, and vows to kill him before leaving to gather his strength. The next day, Shinichi is driven into fear and paranoia, imagining Gotou everywhere and realizing that he is unprotected while Migi sleeps. He breaks down but Satomi invites him to her house that night, where they make love. Shinichi confesses to Satomi that he loves her and his will to survive is renewed. | ||||||

| Shinichi and Migi attempt to kill Gotou by crashing a car into him but he survives. They then try to ambush Gotou in a forest where Migi separates from Shinichi for a surprise attack. Their attack plan fails and Migi sacrifices himself to enable Shinichi to escape, leaving Shinichi heartbroken at losing Migi, whom he has come to see as a friend. Injured and alone, Shinichi is taken in by an old woman named Mitsuyo. He finds that Migi's cells are still within his body. When villagers inform Mitsuyo that a villager was killed, Shinichi realizes that Gotou was responsible. He tells Mitsuyo about the monster and decides to confront the Parasite on his own. Mitsuyo tells not to throw his life away. | ||||||

| Shinichi hunts Gotou in the forest during night and finds him sleeping but Gotou wakes up. Shinichi is no match for him and takes a savage beating, but eventually manages to pierce his body with a metal pipe from a dump of toxic waste. When Gotou attempts to strike Shinichi, a fragment of Migi emerges from Shinichi's right arm and counters the blow, reuniting with the rest of himself that had been absorbed by Gotou. Infected with toxins from the pipe, the Parasites within Gotou's body rebel, allowing Migi to destroy the body. As Gotou's body tries to regenerate, Shinichi is left with the decision between letting him live or die. He is reluctant to kill another life but decides that all he can do is protect his small family and kills Gotou for the sake of humanity. | ||||||

| A year after the town hall battle, the murders have stopped and there have been no sightings of Parasites, making Shinichi wonder if the Parasites have truly stopped or just gotten better at hiding. In a dream, Migi bids Shinichi farewell, explaining that since being in Gotou's body, he has experienced a constant stream of information and would like to go into hibernation to take a break. Shinichi is heartbroken and wakes up with a restored right hand. During a date, Uragami abducts Satomi. He explains how humanity is filled with monsters; Satomi urges that Shinichi is human; it is Uragami who is the monster. Uragami pushes Satomi over the edge of the roof just as Shinichi races to grab her and he breaks down. Migi appears in his mind and Shinichi realizes that his right hand is holding Satomi's hand when he was at a distance where that wasn't possible. He realizes that Migi came out of hibernation to help him save her and that he isn't truly gone. He thanks Migi. | ||||||

- Adult Swim lists the series as premiering at 1 a.m. ET/PT on Saturday, which is effectively Sunday.
- On October 31–November 1, 2015, Adult Swim ran an Akame ga Kill! marathon on Halloween where they played episodes 4–8 and show extra episodes of 9–11 due to daylight saving time.[8]
- On the broadcast night of November 28–29, 2015, Adult Swim hosted a marathon where they played the first seven episodes of the show.[9]
