The song was written and produced by Swift, Frank Dukes and Louis Bell. A synth-driven love song, "All of the Girls You Loved Before" sees Swift extend gratitude to the women in her boyfriend's life, including his former girlfriends, for shaping his experiences which led him to her. Music critics wrote positively of the song, complimenting its affectionate lyrics and the dreamy tones of its production. Commercially, the song charted within the top 25 in Australia, Canada, Hungary, Ireland, Japan, Malaysia, New Zealand, the Philippines, Singapore, the United Kingdom, and the United States, and peaked at number 10 on the international Billboard Global 200 chart; it extended several of Swift's all-time Billboard chart records.

Background and release

Taylor Swift released her seventh studio album, Lover, in August 2019, to critical and commercial success.[1][2] Since then, she has released three more studio albums and two re-recorded albums: Folklore and Evermore in 2020, Fearless (Taylor's Version) and Red (Taylor's Version) in 2021, and Midnights in 2022.[3] A demo version of an unreleased track from Lover, titled "All of the Girls", leaked online in 2023,[4] and went viral on TikTok.[5][6]

Swift embarked on the Eras Tour, her sixth headlining concert tour and first tour in five years, on March 18, 2023. To celebrate the tour's launch, she released four songs on March 17: "Eyes Open (Taylor's Version)", "Safe & Sound (Taylor's Version)", "If This Was a Movie (Taylor's Version)" and "All of the Girls You Loved Before".[7]

Composition

"All of the Girls You Loved Before" was written and produced by Swift, Frank Dukes, and Louis Bell.[8] It was conceived during the recording sessions for Lover,[9] but did not make the final track list of the album.[10] "All of the Girls You Loved Before" is a synth-pop song[11] that incorporates soft synths and has a soundscape that critics described as "dreamy" and "ethereal".[6][12] Lyrically, it is a love song that media publications deemed a message to Swift's boyfriend, English actor Joe Alwyn. Swift discusses her romantic partner's past love life and expresses gratitude to his ex-girlfriends for making him the righteous man he is now.[11][13][14] In the bridge, she appreciates his mother and all the women in his life and promises to love him forever.[5]

Some critics interpreted the line "crying in the bathroom for some dude whose name I cannot remember now" as a reference to the events described in her 2021 song "All Too Well (10-Minute Version)".[12][6] Elle considered the song's title to be a reference to the Netflix film To All the Boys I've Loved Before, which was released in 2018 when Swift was creating Lover.[13]

Critical reception

Jake Viswanath of Bustle opined that the song "would have fit perfectly on Lover, as one of her most spellbound yet self-assured love songs to date."[12] The Straits Times critics described "All of the Girls You Loved Before" as a catchy tune that has all of the characteristics of a "Swift bop"–memorable, catchy melody and lyrical storytelling.[15] The Independent's Annabel Nugent described the song as "dreamy and ethereal pop gold awash in soft synths and breezy lyrics about being in love."[6]

Commercial performance

"All of the Girls You Loved Before" debuted at number 10 on the international Billboard Global 200 chart with 34.2 million streams and 22,000 digital downloads sold. It was Swift's 14th top-10 entry on the chart, a record among women.[16]

In the United States, the song opened at number 12 on the Billboard Hot 100 with 15.3 million streams, 17,500 digital sales, and 1.2 million radio audience despite the lack of radio promotion. It extended three of Swift's all-time records; the song marked the 189th Hot 100 entry of her career (the most among women), her 80th top-10 entry on the Digital Songs chart (the most for any act), and her first new Hot 100 entry in 2023 (Swift holds the longest streak on the Hot 100 as the first artist with an "uninterrupted" 18-year run on the chart, having charted a song every year since her debut with "Tim McGraw" in 2006).[17]

Elsewhere, "All of the Girls You Loved Before" debuted on the charts of several countries, peaking within the top 25 of the Philippines (6),[18] Ireland (9),[19] the United Kingdom (11),[20] Canada (12),[21] New Zealand (13),[22] Singapore (13),[23] Australia (15),[24] Malaysia (17),[25] Japan (18),[26] and Hungary (22),[27] and further reaching the Netherlands, Norway, Portugal and Sweden.[note 1]
