Dewgong (Pokémon)

The Seel belonging to the Cerulean Gym evolved into a Dewgong in The Misty Mermaid, thus also marking the species' debut.

In A Test in Paradise!, Goh caught a Dewgong. It has a tendency to fall in love easily.

In Mewtwo Strikes Back, Neesha first used a Dewgong to travel to New Island. It was later captured and cloned by Mewtwo. The Dewgong clone reappeared in Mewtwo Returns. Neesha's Dewgong reappeared in Mewtwo Strikes Back—Evolution, a remake of Mewtwo Strikes Back, where it played the same role.

A Dewgong appeared under the ownership of Pryce in Rage of Innocence, As Cold as Pryce, and Nice Pryce Baby. It was first used in an unofficial battle against Ash's Phanpy and won. It was later defeated by Cyndaquil during Ash's official Gym battle with Pryce.

In Up Close and Personable!, a Dewgong lived in the lake near the Pokémon Summer Academy. Ash and Angie stumbled upon it, and Ash decided to use the opportunity to draw it.

Dewgong, as its name implies, seems to be based on a dugong, sightings of which are thought to be the origin of the mythical mermaid. Although all current members of Sirenia inhabit warm waters, the extinct Steller's sea cow once inhabited the cold waters of the Bering Sea, which may explain Dewgong's Ice-type. It also shares characteristics with various aquatic mammals that live in the Arctic Ocean. Its face and white fur are similar to a harp seal pup. Its long, white body is similar to a beluga whale. Its horn may be inspired by a narwhal, and its tusks may be inspired by a walrus.

Dewgong may be a portmanteau of dew (water droplets condensing on a cold surface) and dugong.

Jugon may be a corruption of dugong.
