Applin (Pokémon)

In The Gathering of Stars, an Applin was at the Isle of Armor.

Applin debuted in PASS25, being one of many Pokémon to suddenly Dynamax.

Applin appears to be based on the larvae of various moths, such as the geometer moth - the larvae of which also known as the inchworm - and the codling moth, whose larvae burrow into apples and feed on its core, inhibiting growth and ripening them earlier. Its evolution methods may be a reference on how the host plant deters its herbivory. It may also be based on the mole lizard, which closely resembles an earthworm, however is classified as an amphisbaenian. As seen in Pokemon Snap, the two protruding arms of the exposed Applin, along with the arms of Flapple, is similar to the mole lizard. Sour wild fruits usually have thicker epidermis and core than the sweeter domesticated varieties, thus Flapple keeping the apple skin and being smaller while Appletun grows bigger and internalizes the whole fruit.

Considering its Dragon typing, it may also be based on Ladon, a dragon from Greek mythology that guards the golden apples in the Garden of the Hesperides. It may also draw inspiration from the biblical serpents, sometimes referred to as dragons, one of which persuades Eve to eat from the forbidden fruit of the Tree of knowledge, most of the time depicted as an apple. It shares many physical similarities with the Lindworm, a serpentine dragon with only two arms and no legs (which Applin also has), and whose name is like the "worm" of insect larvae. It may also be a pun on wyrm.

Applin may be a combination of apple and inside or tannin, a biblical serpentine dragon.

Kajicchu may be a combination of 齧る kajiru (to gnaw), 果実 kajitsu (fruit), and 虫 chū (bug; worm).
