Plot

Your character and the rest of the clan follow the whispers of the huge and attractive Pacha tree that has sentimental value. After creating your character, we meet the Clan leader shaman Vuak, who promises a new obscurity to the community. After finding the highly acclaimed Pacha Tree, it is decided that it is as good as any place to settle down and live.[7] After this point, we try to make inventions with the ideas we found together with our clan and take the first steps of civilization.[8]

Gameplay

The gameplay in Roots of Pacha, which takes place in the Stone Age, is generally based on "discovery" and "idea".[9] When you donate the fish you catch in the village or the seeds collected from anywhere, it will return you contribution points (currency) and welfare points to your clan. Spending contribution points generates new ideas.[10]

Development

Roots of Pacha, developed by Soda Den, a small studio consisting of two brothers Timo and Joni, was funded through a Kickstarter campaign, and Crytivo stepped in as a publisher in 2021.[11]

Release

Roots of Pacha was released for Windows and macOS via Steam on April 25, 2023.[12] During development, there were also plans to release it for PlayStation and Xbox consoles, as well as for the Nintendo Switch.[13]

The game was eventually delisted from Steam. On May 13, Soda Den said on Twitter that they were having a dispute over the rights of the game with Crytivo, and that the publisher had authorized Valve to remove it without the Soda Den team's consent.[14][15] However, some hours later, Crytivo responded that, two days after the game was published, the developers had contacted them about canceling their contract, which would end a revenue-sharing agreement between both parties.[16] Both Soda Den and Crytivo announced their efforts to restore the game and to end the dispute.[14][16] According to Valve's guidelines, a conflict between teams would have their game page removed until it is settled.[17]

Reception

Roots of Pacha received "generally favorable" reviews, according to review aggregator Metacritic.[19]

PC Gamer's Lauren Morton referred to the game as "my favorite Stardew Valley-like game".[20] and Andrea Shearon, from the same site about the game, wrote that she "intelligently" iterate a genre famous for finding joy in the monotonous and mundane.[21] Sam Loveridge writing for GamesRadar+ referred to the game's originality as it manages to feel "unique and refreshing" mostly due to its setting and approach to progression.[22]
