Career
Mellor began his career at Leeds Road in 1976, where he was an apprentice at Huddersfield. In 1978, he signed professional forms with the club and was part of the first team squad.[2] He would make his debut on 11 April 1978 against York City in the Fourth Division.[3][4] He played one game for the club.[5]
Mellor remained at the club throughout the 1979–80 season, even appearing on that season's squad photo but he left the club in June 1980. He was given a free transfer to neighbours Barnsley.[6][7]
While at Barnsley, Mellor coached his local side, New Mill FC from 1980 onwards.[8]
In 1981 he joined the army[9] and later the police force before becoming a pub landlord in 1991, running the Duke of Leeds in New Mill.[10]
